NIGHT SKY Review: J.K Simmons and Sissy Spacek Deliver in Unique Sci-Fi Series

Amazon Prime Video has been cranking out the hits lately. Their newest series, Night Sky, is the latest addition to their impressive roster.

Oscar-winning actors J.K Simmons and Sissy Spacek star as an older couple who have something special in their backyard shed: a portal to space. Throughout the 8 episodes, we are taken on a subtle journey. While labeled as a sci-fi thriller, there are also tones of relationship drama we get to be a part of as well. Irene and Franklin (played by Simmons and Spacek) are getting older and face their granddaughter, Denise (Khia McKirnan) suggesting they move elsewhere where they can be cared for. Shortly after, we are introduced to Byron (Adam Bartley) and Jude (Chai Hansen) who initially complicates things for the couple.

Night Sky is truthfully a breath of fresh air for many reasons. For starters, the series is such an original concept, unlike anything we have today. In a world where Hollywood is lazily pumping out remakes, prequels, and delayed sequels, it feels nice to have some original ideas be brought to our screens. Simmons and Spacek are legends that shine, but promising newcomers McKirnan and Hansen hold their own as well.

Overall, it’s safe to say that, while being extremely unique and easy to follow, Night Sky has the potential to attract an audience and keep us interested for more seasons to come. Word of mouth will be key in creating buzz around the series as the most exciting pieces can’t be shown in trailers. Definitely a treat, further proving Prime Video is strong competition for other streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu.
