Following the demise of the legendary Manga artist and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball Super manga couldn’t help but go into an indefinite hiatus especially after disputes over rights to the series arose. It’s been nearly a year since the hiatus which has left the countless fans of the series restless and at the same time anticipating for a new episode began, the good news now is that luck has shined it’s light on the series because Dragon Ball Super will finally be returning on February 20, 2025, with an all-new special one-shot chapter.
The news about the upcoming one-shot chapter was announced at Jump Festa 2025, and it was accompanied by an illustration of Black Frieza made by series artist Toyotarou. This much anticipated return would be the first ever release done without the guidance of Toriyama.
With someone else in charge of the writing, the certainty of the manga series future is quite uncertain.
Dragon Ball Super — All About The One-Shot Chapter
The last chapter before the hiatus saw Piccolo being attacked by Gamma 2 —a Red Ribbon Army Android created by Dr. Hedo the grandson of Dr. Gero. In the chapter, Commander Magenta the CEO of Red pharmaceuticals coerced Hedo into reviving the Red Ribbon Army which was previously led by his late father Commander Red.
When Piccolo was being attacked, Goku, Vegeta, and Broly were training under Whis on Beerus’ planet. Piccolo, who was lucky enough to evade the android, tailed it until it led him to the Red Army base. There, Piccolo learnt that the Gamma that attacked him was created by Hedo to infiltrate and destroy Bulma’s Capsule Corporation and their superpower allies. Piccolo also heard Magenta’s plan to kidnap Pan and lure Gohan into a trap. Towards the end of the chapter, Piccolo was able to convince Gamma 1 and 2 of Magenta’s evil plans, and Hedo killed Magenta right after Magenta activated Cell Max.
The latest installment of Dragon Ball Super will not continue with Gohan, Goku, Piccolo and Vegeta storyline, rather it’ll be more on the adventures of Goten and Trunks. The manga’s version of the anime-original film featured Goten and Trunks in a much heavier role, beginning the section by following the two high schoolers’ daily lives as Saiyaman X-1 and X-2.
Although fans of the years-long animation series may not be satisfied with the one-shot chapter of this upcoming Dragon Ball Super manga, this is so much better than nothing at all after such a long hiatus. Also, Toei Animation recently revealed that two films are currently in production in the studio and that one of them may very well be a Dragon Ball movie.
