Jackie Chan Shares Explosive Update On “Rush Hour 4”

Hmm! War! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! C’mon, sing with me oh great fans of Rush Hour —hahaha.

The first instalment of Rush Hour (1998) really blew off the roof with its massive reviews and acceptance. Talk about the great chemistry between the legendary Jackie Chan, and Chris Tucker as they played the characters Hong Kong Chief Inspector Lee, and LAPD detective James Carter respectively— while rescuing the kidnapped daughter of a diplomat.

The first instalment was so successful and well received that it had to get a sequel: Rush Hour 2 (2001). And just like the original Rush Hour earned $244 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $35 million, its sequel generated even more, with a global haul of $347 million to help offset its $90 million budget. With the successful sequel came shouts of a third installment.

However, Rush Hour 3 (2007) couldn’t meet up with the bar its predecessors set. It wasn’t a complete flop per say, but it was nothing compared to the first two. It dropped to $258 million and suffered further because of its whopping $140 million budget.

Will There Be A Fourth Installment For Rush Hour?

With how poorly Rush Hour 3 performed, it’s natural to assume that there wouldn’t be another Rush Hour. But, NO. Fans of the franchise are very much eager to see the Chan and Tucker duo team up once again to solve crimes the best way they know how to, which is with tons of guns blazing, and bits of martial arts here and there.

Back in 2023, at the Red Sea Film Festival, Chan confirmed Rush Hour 4 was in development and shared that he was scheduled to meet with the director to discuss the script. But then, the star of “Around The World In 80 Days” didn’t specify which director he was speaking of. The thing is, all three Rush Hour movies were directed by Brett Ratner, but his return to the director’s seat for the potential fourth part is uncertain. This is because Ratner is reported to have stepped away from Hollywood in 2018 following a series of misconduct allegations.

That same 2023, Tucker shared his excitement in wanting to reprise his role alongside Chan with Variety: “‘Rush Hour 4,’ that’s something I definitely will probably drop in there because I love working with Jackie, but I’ve got some new stuff that I think you’re really gonna like. I’m excited about it.”

After some back and forth about the movie’s fate, reports have emerged indicating that Lionsgate discussed Rush Hour 4 in a 2024 meeting. Well, it’s been a while since these statements were made with nothing to show for it but recently, at a red carpet event while promoting Karate Kid: Legends Chan offered a promising update about Rush Hour 4. He said, “The script is still going on. I want to do a Rush Hour 4,” the martial arts expert said. “And I want to do [another] Shanghai Knights, Shanghai Dawn.”

However, Chan was unable to offer any specifics about the production timeline or when fans could expect to see the film, “I don’t know. Ask the director, ask the studio, ask the writer,” the actor continued before jokingly adding, “Hurry up! Otherwise, Chris Tucker and me [will be] 100 years old. We’ll be old men doing Rush Hour.” When Chan was further asked if he wanted to do the project, he affirmed with the list of movies he would like to do. He said, “Yes! And I want to do [another] Shanghai Knights, Shanghai Dawn. Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, and Shanghai Dawn. The script is still going on. I want to do a Rush Hour 4.”
