Incredibles 3 Gets New Director Plus Major Shake Up

The first two films were written and directed by Brad Bird.

If you’re a lover of the Parr family aka The Incredibles courtesy of its incredible first and second installment, then anticipate its third installment.

The Incredibles was first released in 2004, and upon its release, it gained massive success to the extent that it won the Academy Award for best animated film the following year. It took fourteen whole years for the sequel to come out. The Incredibles 2 which dropped in 2018 also received wide success and even earned $1.24 billion globally.

The first two films were written and directed by Brad Bird. In August 2024, Disney and Pixar officially announced a threequel for The Incredibles at the D23 Expo event, and went on to share that Bird is “developing” the new project. But that was that on the announcement because no further information on how deep Bird was involved in the upcoming film was revealed so, it was naturally assumed that Bird will also helm The Incredibles 3.

Who Is The Incredibles 3 New Director And Why Was Brad Bird Changed?

On June 10, The Hollywood Report revealed that The Incredibles 3 will not be directed by Bird but by Bird’s apprentice Peter Sohn who’s notable for his works in Elemental, The Good Dinosaur, Ratatouille, Light Year, Monster University, etc. The outlet explained that there was no specific reason for Bird bowing out of director duties but they did say that Bird will remain involved in the new movie, as he’s currently writing the screenplay and will produce the feature.

THR also noted that a plausible reason for Bird’s withdrawal from directing the film might have to do with his plate being full with other projects like, Ray Gunn which he’s currently in pre-production for —as it happens that the American filmmaker, animator, and voice actor has been working on the project for decades. It’s the story of the last human private eye in a futuristic world of aliens.

He’s also working on an adaptation of the historical novel 1906, set during the great San Francisco earthquake of that year. Bird and Sohn are frequent collaborators, and he was hand-picked to direct the film by Bird and Pixar chief Pete Docter.

What The Incredibles 3 Switching Directors Could Mean

The fact that Bird chose Sohn to direct the threequel of The Incredibles means so many things, one being that Bird trusts Sohn’s capability. Sohn has worked on every animated Bird film (including The Incredibles and Incredibles 2) so directing The Incredibles 3 wouldn’t be so foreign to Sohn. Sohn’s second movie Elemental that he directed at Pixar, was nominated for the best animation feature Oscar last year.

Another angle would be that both Pixar and Bird want the movie to be released sooner rather than later. It wouldn’t be entirely good for business for the third instalment to take another fourteen years to be released.

The Incredibles 3 does not have an official release date set as of this writing.
