Project Hail Mary, an adaptation of the 2021 science fiction novel of the same name by Andy Weir is set to be released exclusively in theaters by Amazon MGM Studios. The film is set to be released in March 20, 2026 but the trailer has officially dropped, starring Ryan Gosling. CinemaCon goers were the first to see footage of the film back in April.
According to Gosling, he called the film an “insanely ambitious story, massive in the scope.” He also said it was so big that they tried to put it on TV but it wouldn’t fit. He doesn’t seem to be lying because the film looks like an epic journey.

Based on a Novel
The novel follows a former scientist and middle school teacher, Ryland Grace who wakes up in a spaceship alone, traveling through space with no memory. He is given a mission to save planet earth from an extinction level event that is caused by a microorganism that is draining the Sun’s energy. He discovers an alien species that is also in the same predicament and befriends a spider-like alien he names Rocky.
Author Andy Weir wrote the majority of the novel during the COVID-19 pandemic and it was #1 in the New York Times bestseller list and won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Science Fiction in 2021.
From Book-to-Screen
In 2020, Weir sold the book’s film adaptation rights to MGM for $3 million. Gosling was eventually signed on to star and produce in the project and by May 2023, it was revealed the production was set to soon start production in May 2024 in the UK.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were both signed into direct and Drew Goddard, who previously adapted Weir’s debut novel The Martian into a film, was set to write the screenplay.
Those who are also signed onto the project are Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Sandra Hüller.

The official synopsis reads:
“Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”
Science fiction films are becoming one of the biggest interests in the film industry lately. With Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 gaining positive reviews this year, Project Hail Mary looks to be another successful Sci-Fi flick.
