Paramount+ Mayor of Kingstown is officially heading for an end as the streaming service announced today that the gritty drama has been renewed for an eight-episode fifth and final season.
Season four pushed the story into even darker territory, with the Russian mob being removed from the board, leaving Kingstown vulnerable. This drew in dangerous new players eager to claim control, and Mike McLusky (Renner), the town’s unofficial broker of order, found his grip on Kingstown increasingly fragile and ultimately threatening to start a full-blown gang war.
At the same time, Mike’s personal life grew more intense, showing how those closest to him were placed directly in harm’s way. This forced him to navigate not only external threats but his own unresolved trauma. The arrival of a headstrong new warden (Falco) further complicated matters, challenging Mike’s authority and pushing him to confront the cost of the choices he’s made to keep Kingstown from tearing itself apart.
Season 4 was a Win with Fans
The Jeremy Renner and Edie Falco-led drama has been one of Paramount+’s most talked-about originals since its debut, from the creative mind of Taylor Sheridan. The series is co-created by Taylor Sheridan, the prolific storyteller behind Yellowstone and its expanding universe, alongside Hugh Dillon, who also appears in the show. The renewal comes on the heels of a critically-acclaimed fourth season, which wrapped on December 28 and currently holds a standout 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Over the course of its 4-season run, the series has earned a reputation for its look at systemic power, incarceration, and moral compromise in a town where prisons are the only thriving industry.

Alongside Renner and Falco, season four featured an ensemble cast including Lennie James, Laura Benanti, Taylor Handley, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Hamish Allan-Headley, and Nishi Munshi. They have been a key part of the show’s success, grounding its heightened stakes in emotionally charged, character-driven storytelling.
The series has a rather solid and extensive executive producing team, led by Sheridan, Dillon, and Renner, with Antoine Fuqua, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Friedman, Dave Erickson, Christoph Schrewe, Wendy Riss, Evan Perazzo, and Keith Cox also serving as executive producers. Erickson has acted as showrunner, helping guide the series’ tonal consistency and narrative escalation.
While Paramount+ has not yet announced a premiere date for the final season, the decision to label season five as the show’s conclusion signals a planned ending rather than an abrupt cancellation. For fans, that means Mayor of Kingstown will have the opportunity to resolve its central conflicts and deliver a final reckoning for Mike McLusky and the town he’s spent years trying (and sometimes failing) to save.
This is a win worth celebrating, as we have seen many shows come to be cancelled, leaving fans hanging and frustrated. But then again, that’s where spin-offs often stepped in to close the chapter.
