Matt Reeves has officially announced that he has completed the script for The Batman Part II on Friday. The writer-director shared the news via his Instagram with a blurred photo of the script and a clear view of a Batman logo on the top of the page. The caption of the photo reads: “Partners in Crime (Fighters).
This update for the film has been long-awaited since the success of the first film. The news of The Batman getting a sequel was announced in April 2022 and after a few delays, it was confirmed that the sequel is now scheduled to be released in theaters on October 1, 2027.
The Batman’s Raving Success
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was both a critical and commercial success. The film made over $772 million worldwide with the Domestic U.S Gross to be around $369 million. The film was still affected by COVID but it became one of the highest-grossing Warner Bros. Film of the year and it became one of the top-grossing superhero film posters-pandemic.
When it came to critic reactions, many raved Reeves’ neo-noir detective vision, Michael Giacchino’s powerful score and the gritty realism and psychological depth. Robert Pattinson’s took the most praise in the film, as he brought a brooding and haunting portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Due the success of the film, The Batman launched a Gothamverse under DC’s Elseworlds. The Penguin HBO series starring Colin Farrell was released last September with the series earning 95% average tomatometer score.
In October 2022, it was confirmed that an Arkham Asylum TV series was set to be in development at HBO but in July 2024, it was reported that the television series was cancelled and will not be moving forward.
Is There a Synopsis for The Batman Part II?
Since Reeves just announced that he finished writing the script, the official synopsis/plot for the film is still under wraps. Currently, the two confirmed actors who are set to reprise their roles in the sequel are Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. A character most fans are hoping to make their appearance is Barry Keoghan’s Joker.
Audience got a sneak peek of the character when the Riddler (Paul Dano) meets the infamous character in Arkham Asylum. This teases an alliance between the characters and a possible hint of the arrival of the Court of Owls.
The delay of the film’s script has brought in some backlash from fans and James Gunn addressed it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly a few weeks ago.
“Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
There is no confirmation if any of these characters except Pattinson and Farrell, are set to make their appearances. Fans looking for any official news of the plot of the film will have to wait a little while longer but with the script finished, more details will be available soon.
