Top Picks Streaming This Month
- East of Eden (Netflix, Oct. 1). Florence Pugh leads Zoe Kazan’s seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic. It is already streaming and easily ranks among October’s biggest prestige-TV releases.
- Carrie (Prime Video, Oct. 7). Mike Flanagan gets eight episodes to put his own spin on Stephen King’s debut novel. All eight episodes arrive at once, making this the obvious October binge.
- Crystal Lake (Peacock, Oct. 15). The Friday the 13th prequel finally arrives, with Linda Cardellini playing Pamela Voorhees. Peacock is releasing all eight episodes at once.
- Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 (Paramount+, Oct. 30). Dexter returning on the Friday before Halloween is almost offensively well-timed. Season 2 brings Michael C. Hall back alongside new threats played by Brian Cox and Dan Stevens.

East of Eden (Netflix, Oct. 1)

Screenshot by Reel Movie Junkie
Format: Limited series | Genre: Drama | Stars: Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist
Zoe Kazan adapts John Steinbeck’s East of Eden with Florence Pugh playing Cathy Ames, whose life becomes intertwined with generations of the Trask family. The seven-episode series expands the novel’s story while putting Cathy’s perspective much closer to the center.
That cast is reason enough, but the bigger draw is seeing what a full limited series can do with a novel that has already had multiple screen adaptations. Pugh, Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist are not exactly a bad starting lineup.

Kill Jackie (AMC+, Oct. 2)
Format: Series | Genre: Crime thriller | Stars: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hattie Hook, Daniel Ings
Jackie Price spent two decades living quietly after leaving her life as a cocaine dealer behind. Then seven elite assassins known as the Seven Demons come after her, forcing Jackie to stop running and start hunting.
Catherine Zeta-Jones playing a retired drug dealer who decides to turn the tables on a group of assassins is a fairly efficient sales pitch. AMC+ describes the series as a stylish revenge thriller, and the early reviews suggest it leans into that comic-book energy rather than realism.

Carrie (Prime Video, Oct. 7)

Format: Series | Genre: Horror | Creator: Mike Flanagan | Star: Summer H. Howell
Mike Flanagan brings Stephen King’s Carrie to television for the first time, with Summer H. Howell playing the isolated teenager whose telekinetic abilities emerge as her life at home and school becomes increasingly unbearable.
The 1976 film is practically untouchable, which makes this adaptation a fascinating gamble. Flanagan has spent years adapting Stephen King, but a series gives him something previous versions did not: considerably more room to live inside the story. Best for Stephen King fans, Mike Flanagan loyalists and anyone who considers October a perfectly reasonable time to watch fictional teenagers have an extremely bad evening.
All eight episodes arrive on Prime Video October 7.
Below (Netflix, Oct 8)

Format: Limited series, 6 episodes | Genre: Thriller | Creator: Jesse McKeown | Stars: Josh Hartnett, Charlie Heaton, Mackenzie Davis
Something is hunting a small Newfoundland town from the water, and the people who live there have to decide whether to run or fight for the only life they know.
Sea monsters are easy to get wrong. Show too much too early and the mystery drains out, show too little and viewers feel cheated. A tight six-episode run gives McKeown room to build dread without padding, and Hartnett, Heaton, and Davis make a cast I’d follow into a lake. This one’s for the creature-feature fans and anyone who want a short, contained thriller before the October horror pile gets heavy.
Matchbox The Movie (Apple TV, Oct. 9)
Format: Movie | Genre: Action comedy | Rating: PG-13 | Director: Sam Hargrave | Stars: John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson
A group of childhood friends gets pulled into an international conspiracy when their former leader, now a CIA operative, returns home. And yes, the movie is inspired by the Matchbox toy cars. Sam Hargrave directed Extraction, so there is at least a reasonable chance the action will have some actual muscle behind it. Cena also remains one of the more dependable modern action-comedy leads.
Apple TV premieres the movie globally October 9.
Love of Your Life (Prime Video, Oct. 14)
Format: Movie | Genre: Romance drama | Rating: R | Director: Rachel Morrison | Stars: Margaret Qualley, Aaron Pierre, Gabriel Basso
Margaret Qualley plays Maya, a nurse whose life changes after a devastating loss sends her to Portugal, where she meets Felix, played by Aaron Pierre. The film explores love, grief and the possibility of starting over.
Qualley and Pierre are an intriguing pairing, and Rachel Morrison makes her feature directorial debut after an acclaimed cinematography career. The film receives a limited theatrical release October 7 before arriving globally on Prime Video October 14.
VisionQuest (Disney+, Oct. 14)

Screenshot by Reel Movie Junkie
Format: Series | Genre: Superhero drama / sci-fi | Stars: Paul Bettany, James Spader
Paul Bettany returns as Vision in Marvel Television’s VisionQuest, which follows the rebooted android as he tries to understand his identity while confronting a new threat and the return of Ultron, voiced again by James Spader. The series arrives October 14 and serves as the final part of the trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along.
Marvel has spent years building toward this corner of the MCU, and Vision remains one of its more interesting characters precisely because his story has always been about identity as much as super-heroics.
Crystal Lake (Peacock, Oct. 15)

Screenshot by Reel Movie Junkie
Format: Series | Genre: Horror | Creator: Brad Caleb Kane | Stars: Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom
The Friday the 13th universe gets a television prequel with Crystal Lake, going back to the camp where Jason Voorhees’ story began. Linda Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother.
The horror franchise has spent decades orbiting Jason, so shifting the focus toward Pamela and the origins of Crystal Lake gives the series room to build something beyond another masked-killer sequel. All eight episodes premiere October 15 on Peacock.
The Diplomat Season 4 (Netflix, Oct. 15)
Format: Series | Genre: Political thriller | Star: Keri Russell
Kate Wyler’s diplomatic nightmare continues when The Diplomat returns for Season 4. Keri Russell reprises her role as Kate, with Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford returning to the increasingly tangled political mess.
The show’s particular talent is turning international diplomacy into something that feels like a marriage argument with nuclear consequences. For political-thriller fans and anyone who enjoys television where everyone in the room is probably lying.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 (Netflix, Oct. 20)

Screenshot by Reel Movie Junkie
Format: Animated series | Genre: Sci-fi action
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 returns to Night City with a completely new crew and a standalone story. The 10-episode series follows new characters while keeping the original’s dystopian world and brutal cyberpunk setting.
This is not simply another season following the original cast. It is a new story with a new group of characters, which makes it accessible even if you have not memorized every neon-lit tragedy from the first series.
The Terminal List Season 2 (Prime Video, Oct. 21)
Format: Series | Genre: Military thriller | Stars: Chris Pratt, Constance Wu, Taylor Kitsch
Chris Pratt returns as Navy SEAL Commander James Reece for the second season of The Terminal List. Based on Jack Carr’s second novel, True Believer, the new season expands Reece’s story into a globe-spanning espionage thriller.
Season 1 was a revenge thriller. Season 2 widens the scope considerably, taking Reece into international conspiracies and espionage. All eight episodes premiere October 21.
Nobody Wants This Season 3 (Netflix, Oct. 22)

Screenshot by Reel Movie Junkie
Format: Series | Genre: Romantic comedy | Stars: Kristen Bell, Adam Brody
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody return as Joanne and Noah for Season 3 of Nobody Wants This, but this time the central question is less about whether they will get together and more about what happens once they actually have to build a life together..
The show’s biggest strength has always been the chemistry between Bell and Brody. Season 3 moves them into a new phase, with the couple moving in together and dealing with the messier reality of being an actual couple. All 10 episodes arrive October 22.
Lupin Part 4 (Netflix, Oct. 23)
Format: Series | Genre: Heist drama | Stars: Omar Sy, Ludivine Sagnier, Soufiane Guerrab
Omar Sy returns as Assane Diop in Lupin Part 4. Four years after Part 3, Assane remains in prison and wants to keep his promise to his son, but a new mystery and a copycat thief pull him back toward the life he was trying to leave behind.
Omar Sy could probably make a grocery receipt feel like a heist, which remains the central appeal.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 (Paramount+, Oct. 30)

Screenshot by Reel Movie Junkie
Format: Series | Genre: Crime drama | Creator: Clyde Phillips | Star: Michael C. Hall
Dexter Morgan returns for Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, with Michael C. Hall back as the serial killer trying to stay one step ahead of the people hunting him. The new season introduces Brian Cox as the New York Ripper and Dan Stevens as the Five Borough Killer.
A Dexter season premiering two days before Halloween is either excellent scheduling or someone at Paramount+ understands their assignment. Season 2 puts Dexter between two killers while continuing the story established in the first season.
