With the Oscars only 3 months away, the window to qualify for this year’s nominations is rapidly approaching. The 94th Academy Awards takes place on Sunday, March 27, and predictions are already rolling in. In the midst of that conversation is Andrew Garfield. He has been in the media almost all year for his rumored and long-awaited role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Aside from that, Garfield has starred in two other films, The Eyes of Tammy Faye and tick, tick…Boom!
Both performances have garnered Garfield a ton of Oscar buzz. There is a heavy focus on the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Jonathan Larson, with a Best Supporting Actor nom lingering for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work shines in his directorial debut and has thus made him a contender for Best Director and Best Picture. Garfield has some stiff competition, to say the least. The current front runner is Will Smith for his role as Venus and Serena Williams’s father in King Richard. Also in talks to fill the next three slots are Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth), and Peter Dinklage (Cyrano).
tick, tick…Boom! earned the space to be eligible for Oscars consideration by simply being shown in theaters one week prior to a Netflix release. This loophole is now an option, as the pandemic led to this change.
While the Academy typically favors musicals, it has been 55 years since a male won for Best Actor while starring in a musical. The last winner was Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady back in 1964. Could this year change that, while giving Garfield his first win or at the very least his second nomination? He was one of five contenders up for Best Actor in 2017, with Casey Affleck ultimately taking home to award for Manchester by the Sea.
Guess we’ll have to wait until March to find out! I’ll post Oscar predictions when the official nominees are announced at a later date.
