Callina Liang Confirmed as Chun-Li in ‘Street Fighter’ Film – Everything We Know So Far

The ‘Street Fighter’ film has found their Chun-Li in Callina Liang!

The star of Steven Soderbergh’s recent supernatural thriller Presence, Callina Liang has officially landed the female lead of Chun-Li in the live-action adaptation of the popular video game, Street Fighter.

Chun-Li became one of the first female playable character in a fighting game whose signature moves included the Hyakuretsukya aka Lightning Kick. She is fierce, highly disciplined, complex character, who stories often revolve in revenge and justice. The character has been portrayed previously by Ming-Na Wen in 1994’s Street Fighter and Kristin Kreuk in 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Release Date Changes

Capcom granted film/TV rights to Legendary Entertainment in April 2023. Soon after, Sony Pictures was to distribute the film alongside Legendary. The film was originally intended to be released in March 20, 2026 but in March of this year, Sony removed the film from its 2026 schedule.

Many outlets are still reporting that the film is still set to release in 2026 but as of today, it looks like the film is delayed indefinitely.

Cast & Crew

Liang is currently the newest addition to the film. She will be joining alongside Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns and Orville Peck. Kitao Sakurai, who’s best known for his work on Bad Trip’s, is set to be the official director of the film.

Danny and Michael Philippou were initially tapped into making the film but exited the project in 2024.

Is There a Synopsis for the Film?

As of today, there has been no official synopsis available. The plot of the film has been under wraps but what we do know is that this film will be a modern reboot. It won’t be a sequel for the earlier films from 1994 and 2009.

In the early production of the film, it was planned that it was going to be shot in multiple locations like: Japan, Thailand and the U.S. This was set so it could preserve the game’s global vibe.

The Street Fighter film is keeping a low-profile when it comes to revealing any plot lines. Recognizable faces have been added to the film with a few changes for when the film will be released to the world. Even though everything seems uncertain, not everything is bad. This will only give the director and the script writers time to write a good Street Fighter film. Not only do they have to do the film justice for regular movie-goers but also for Street Fighter fans who have been waiting for this film for a very long time.
