In a few months time —April 2025, Mortal Kombat will mark its four year anniversary, and in a few more months a sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat will hit theaters on October 24, 2025. It isn’t a surprise how the buzz around it keeps getting louder and louder especially after a promotional poster for the upcoming sequel Mortal Kombat 2 was unveiled by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Mortal Kombat 2 was Directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, it was also produced by James Wan, Michael Clear, Todd Garner, and E. Bennet Walsh. The film follows the 2021 movie that featured Lewis Tan’s Cole Young who joined the world of Mortal Kombat and learned about the violent past between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. There’s been word on the plot details for the sequel, yet, but the film has already been granted an R-rating for “strong bloody violence and gore, and language.”
The poster and official logo for New Line Cinema’s forthcoming action fantasy sequel which was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and subsequently shared on X via Mortal Kombat official X page, features a faux film called Uncaged Fury Starring Karl Urban as the infamous Johnny Cage. The poster has a description that claims to be from the same team behind Rebel Without a Cage. In the typical Johnny Cage manner, it featured motorcycles and explosions behind Urban’s Johnny Cage who stood front and center, sporting the character’s sunglasses along with a leather jacket.

Towards the ending of Mortal Kombat 1 which surprisingly toed a different line from the video games’ usual storyline (The story didn’t follow the usual Mortal Kombat tournament, but instead followed Cole and his allies as they unlocked their arcanas), Johnny Cage was teased. The teasing of Johnny Cage brought so much noise to the Mortal Kombat fandom to the extent that when it was announced that Karl Urban (The Boys) will play Cage’s the life of the party character the noise increased ten fold.
A hardcore Mortal Kombat fan will know that Tinsel Town’s most sought-after actor who doubles as a narcissist will bring so much vibe and life to the sequel. But then, what about the cast playing the character? This question comes up following the slur of arguments that arose after it was confirmed that Urban was cast as Cage. The argument wasn’t based on whether or not Urban will do justice to the role but on the fact that Urban is too old to play Johnny Cage.
Although 52-year-old Urban playing the role has been up for debate amongst Mortal Kombat fans, it’s worth noting that there are older versions of Cage in some of the Mortal Kombat games, as he’s often depicted as a middle-aged man and the father of the Cassie Cage character.
Mortal Kombat 2 will feature the return of Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao.
Joining them are several new characters in the form of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as emperor Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman as Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, Desmond Chiam as Edenian King Jerrod, and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.
