Everything Ryan Murphy does is gold, but American Horror Story is a different kind of swing entirely.

For twelve seasons, the anthology built its reputation on fresh starts, new characters, and self-contained stories that kept fans guessing about where things would go next. Season 13 throws that playbook out entirely.

More returning cast members are confirmed for AHS: 13 than any other season in the show’s history. We’re talking veterans from Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse, 1984, Double Feature, and Delicate all converging in the same place at the same time. Murphy is calling it his Avengers moment, and looking at the lineup, that comparison is hard to argue.

The season runs for 13 half-hour episodes, kicking off on Thursday, September 24, at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu. International viewers can catch it on Disney+.

It’s Not a Coven Season!

Given the number of witches on the confirmed cast list, fan forums have been treating AHS: 13 as a Coven follow-up for months. Murphy addressed that directly at The Shards premiere, and his answer reframes the entire season.

“Everybody thinks it’s a Coven season and it’s not. It’s all the seasons,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “Sarah Paulson is playing six or seven roles. Jessica Lange is playing all four of her iconic characters. Evan Peters is playing five characters. It is like the Avengers. They all come together to defeat the ultimate evil.”

That is not a modest pitch. The idea of pulling characters from completely separate horror worlds into a single unified storyline is the most structurally ambitious thing this franchise has ever attempted. Whether it lands is a question for September 24, but the ambition alone deserves credit.

• Sarah Paulson is taking on more than anyone else in the cast, playing somewhere between six and seven roles. Her history with the show covers nearly the full run: Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse, and Double Feature.
• Jessica Lange returns to all four characters she created during her original tenure, with roles drawn from Murder House, Asylum, Coven, and Freak Show. More on her return below, because the story behind it is worth its own section.
• Evan Peters matches Paulson in terms of sheer range, bringing five characters back from Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse, and Double Feature.
• Angela Bassett returns having previously appeared in Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, and Apocalypse.
• Kathy Bates comes back with the longest supporting run in the group, with credits across Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, Apocalypse, and Double Feature.
• Emma Roberts is back from Coven, Freak Show, Cult, Apocalypse, 1984, and Delicate.
• Billie Lourd returns from Cult, Apocalypse, 1984, and Double Feature.
• Gabourey Sidibe previously appeared in Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, and Apocalypse.
• Leslie Grossman is back from Cult, Apocalypse, 1984, and Double Feature.
• John Carroll Lynch reprises Twisty the Clown, his breakout AHS role from Freak Show, having also appeared in Hotel, Cult, Apocalypse, and 1984.
• Rounding out the returning veterans: Mat Fraser from Freak Show, Mena Suvari from Murder House and Apocalypse, Zach Villa from 1984, and Seth Gabel from Hotel.

Murphy has said that before writing a single scene, he already had Roberts, Peters, Bates, Bassett, Sidibe, Grossman, and Paulson committed. Getting Lange was the final piece, and the one he was least sure about.

Jessica Lange Almost Said No — Until She Was Swarmed by Young Fans

Lange’s departure from AHS after Season 4 was not framed as a hiatus. Over the years since, she was clear in interviews that she was done with the show and had moved on to other work. Murphy reaching back out was, by his own admission, a reach.

What changed was not Murphy’s pitch. It was a night after a Broadway performance. Lange was meeting audience members outside the theater and found herself surrounded by young fans who knew her not from her decades of acclaimed film work, but from American Horror Story specifically. That reaction stuck with her.

Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter what happened next:

“I reached out to her thinking she would say no, and if she had said no, I probably wouldn’t have done it. She told me a story about how she was doing Broadway last season and she would go out after the show, and there were all of these young people who were there because they all watched her work on American Horror Story. And she was very moved by that. I said, ‘Well, that’s funny, because my idea is for you to do all four of your favorite characters.’ And she said, ‘Sign me up. I’d love to do it.’ I was so grateful.”

Murphy has since confirmed that Lange’s participation was the condition on which the entire season was built. No Lange, no season. Peters, speaking to THR earlier this year while promoting another Murphy project, said he did not see it coming.

“Ryan knows how to have those dinners. He will get you in a second. I was definitely shocked, but thrilled, honestly.”

The New Faces Joining the Franchise

First-time AHS cast members include Paul Anthony Kelly, Alex Consani, Avantika, Madelaine Petsch, John Waters, and Joey Pollari. Kelly is the one to watch. He previously worked with Murphy, playing JFK Jr. in a separate project, and according to Vogue, his character in AHS: 13 is the linchpin of the season.

That kind of billing for a franchise newcomer suggests he is carrying real narrative weight, not just making a cameo.

Ariana Grande Was In. Then She Wasn’t.

Grande had been set to make her AHS debut this season, and her casting generated the kind of attention that tends to follow her into any new project. A scheduling conflict with her tour pulled her out before filming could accommodate her. Murphy addressed it publicly, noting that Grande remains interested in the franchise and that a future season appearance is still on the table when the timing works out.

AHS built its reputation on reinvention and there is a version of this that works. The Apocalypse season crossed Murder House and Coven characters for the first time and pulled it off well enough to remain one of the most discussed installments in the franchise.

AHS: 13 is attempting something far larger on the same basic premise: that audiences who have spent years with these characters will find it more satisfying to see them reunited than to be introduced to new ones. With over 700 million hours of the franchise streamed across the globe, we think he may be onto something.
