Season 3 of House of the Dragon may have unfortunately ended, but the Dance of the Dragons is not over yet. As if anyone is ready to see these beautiful babies dance. Come 2028, we’ll all be weeping on our living room floors.
Ryan Condal is already deep into building the final chapter of House of the Dragon. So, based on what he has recently shared and what we already know from the book, Season 4 is shaping up to be the most ambitious run the show has attempted.
We’re talking new dragons, new locations, new characters, and a production timeline that points squarely to a summer 2028 premiere. Here is everything we know.
When Does House of the Dragon Season 4 Come Out?

The short answer is 2028, most likely summer. Condal confirmed to Empire that pre-production is already underway, with location scouts happening over the summer and full prep beginning in the fall. Cameras are scheduled to roll in early 2027. Condal told Empire,
“The whole season is payoff. We’re all on schedule; prep starts in the fall. So we’ll go back and start revising the scripts, planning sets, and location scouts are already happening over the course of the summer to figure out new places we’re going. And then before you know it, hammers will be swinging, and 3.4 million screws will be being put together at Leavesden.”
He added: “We’ll start filming again in early 2027, and I’m really looking forward to the Last Dance, as we’re calling it on our side. There will certainly be more dragons, I can guarantee you that.”
2028 makes sense. If Season 4 follows a comparable schedule from an early 2027 start, the timing lines up cleanly with a summer 2028 release. While the final season could run longer in production, there are currently no known complications in the way.
It feels like undeserved torture having to wait, but A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to return for its second season in early 2027, which should keep us Westeros fans occupied while Condal finishes the job.
Where The Wild Dragons Are…
So, two wild dragons from the books have been conspicuously absent from the show so far, and both are worth paying attention to heading into the final season.
- The Cannibal: never ridden, known for eating other dragons’ hatchlings.
- Grey Ghost: never ridden, more elusiveness than aggression.
When asked directly about both dragons in a June interview with IGN, Condal kept his cards close but left the door open.
“Look, there’s a lot of runway left, and it is called House of the Dragon. It is the Dance of the Dragons. I think there are more dragon cards to be turned over as time rolls on here.”
That is not a confirmation of either dragon, but it is not a denial.
What Ryan Condal Has Promised for the Final Season

Condal has been measured in what he’s given away, but the broad strokes are encouraging. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he framed Season 4 as a complete package rather than a setup for something else.
“It’s a great privilege to be able to tell a story, and to be able to control and write the ending, and to control when and where that happens. This is not a given in making television, certainly. So, we’re very excited to get back in, and we have new characters, and new dragons and new locations all to come, that I think are gonna make it a very worthy final season.”
Three words: new characters, new dragons, new locations. Given how much ground is still left to cover in George R.R. Martin‘s source material, all three of those promises will need to be delivered.
