Ring the bells! Sound the alarms! Scream on top of your lungs for Pride and Prejudice is coming to Netflix!!
I bet every Jane Austen fan will be on their toes in anticipation of the upcoming Miniseries of this great book that, even centuries after its publication, is still nothing short of amazing. I was only twelve years old when I first read the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. To say that I fell in love with the writer and the fictional characters in the book, like the intelligent Elizabeth Bennet and the infamous proud Fitzwilliam Darcy, is to barely scratch the surface of my real feelings. I have since marveled at how a book written as far back as 1813 could be such a good read each time I pick it up.
Many have tried to make a movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but their interpretations all failed to do justice to this great story —except for the first Pride and Prejudice Miniseries released in 1995, which won several awards for its excellent portrayal of the book. I bet that by now you can’t wait to know more about this upcoming show on Netflix; well, read on to find out.
Who Will Write Netflix’s ‘Pride And Prejudice’?
Following the news that Netflix will be bringing Pride and Prejudice to our screens once again, best-selling author Dolly Alderton, known for her books “Everything I Know About Love, Ghosts, and Good Material,” announced that she will be writing the script for the Netflix series adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel.
The modern-day romance novelist told Netflix, “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it.” She continued, “Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr. Darcy.”
Who Are The Casts Of Netflix’s ‘Pride And Prejudice’?
Just like the 1995 adaptation, Netflix will make it a six-episode series featuring notable UK actors such as Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin (known for Nosferatu, Black Mirror) and BAFTA winner Jack Lowden (known for Slow Horses, Benediction). The two will play the characters of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, respectively.
As for the role of Mrs. Bennet, Academy Award winner Olivia Colman (Known for The Favourite, The Crown) will do the honors. Corrin will follow in the footsteps of Keira Knightley, who played Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
When Can We Expect Netflix’s ‘Pride And Prejudice’?
As for the release date? Alderton’s Pride and Prejudice has been tentatively slated for late 2025 or early 2026. The show will be executive produced by Dolly Alderton, Euros Lyn, Laura Lankester, Will Johnston, Louise Mutter, and Emma Corrin.
But whilst sitting and waiting for the series to drop, I can’t help but wonder whether or not this upcoming Netflix series will do justice to the story the same way the BBC1 did in the 1995 series. The six-episode series produced by Sue Birtwistle and directed by Simon Langton starred Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, respectively.
